TITLE : CULTIVATE A TEACHABLE SPIRIT 1
Proverbs 26:12 :
"Do you see a man who is wise (not teachable) in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him." emphasis added mine
The most essential component of leadership is attitude. Attitude is more important than many other leadership attributes like vision, skills, giftedness, expertise, organization e.t.c. Leadership is 10% aptitude and 90% attitude. One who desires to be a leader must cultivate a teachable spirit. Teachability is an attitude that marks a true leader. There is nothing as powerful as attitude. Attitude dictates your response to the present and determines the quality of your present life and future. You are your attitude, and your attitude is you. Attitude creates your world and designs your destiny. It determines your success or failure in any venture in life. More opportunities and platforms have been lost, withheld, and forfeited because of attitude than from any other cause. Attitude is a more powerful distinction in life than beauty, power, title, or social status. It is more important than wealth and it can keep one poor. It is the servant that can open the doors of life or close the gates of possibility. It can make beauty ugly and homeliness attractive. The distinguishing factor between a leader and a non leader is attitude.
No amount of training or workshop in leadership skills, courses in management methods, power titles or associations can substitute for the right attitudes.
Of all the tough lessons i've learned so far, being teachable stand out as the most significant and critical attributes for success, not only in leadership but in any endeavor. Their evil twin counterparts, pride and arrogance, are the cornerstones of failure. Being teachable and humble is not about competency or mental ability; it is all about a thirst and an appreciation for knowledge. Are you planning a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay first the foundation of humility.” When I meet someone who is teachable they are self-effacing, leaders that are teachable are not condescending, they listen well, acknowledge their errors and fix them, they continually seek more knowledge.
I’ve devoted and concentrated my life to studying leadership, and to equip leaders. And I’ve come to the measured conclusion that, when it comes to the indispensable qualities for being a leader in the body of Christ and in life in general, there’s one characteristic that perhaps should be placed at the top: teachability. There’s no way to escape the fact that being teachable is foundational to spiritual growth and character development in all areas of our walk with the Lord.
If there is one book in the Bible that majors in teachability, it is the book of Proverbs. This means teachability is associated with wisdom.
How would you recognize a genuinely teachable leader? I believe the answer is simple. He will typically ask more questions than he will provide answers. He will listen and observe more than he will talk. It’s not by accident that we have two ears and one mouth. The leader whose life will affect many is a man who listens at least twice as long as he speaks.
Are you truly teachable? In short, are you growing in “The Indispensable Quality Every Leader Needs to Possess”?
