TITLE : REL 101 : THE LAW OF RESPECT 8
My sole passion in life is raising, equipping leaders to ultimately fulfill the Great Commission. For some days I've been teaching on why leaders should prioritize relationship. Relationship is the major component of influence. Great leadership is built on Great relationship. If you feel you are not earning or commanding deserved respect as a leader, parent, a pastor, a supervisor, an executive or a coach, you might want to pay attention to the Law of Respect.
Being a leader takes respect. Are you respected in your community. If you’ve ever been responsible for leading a team, or an organization where everyone is expected to participate, but no one reports to you directly, you will fully understand that without influence, you can’t make very much happen. You have to grow and develop yourself into a leader that people will naturally want to follow. If you haven't earned respect, be prepared for a lot of frustration.
So What Is The Law Of Respect?
The Law of Respect states that People naturally Follow Leaders Stronger Than Themselves. This means followers are attracted to people who are better or stronger leaders than themselves. This is the reason why leaders commit themselves to personal growth. They understood that it's difficult to lead people who are better than themselves. It's natural you can't lead effectively someone who is better and stronger in leadership, values, character, charisma e.t.c.
This concept seems simple enough, doesn’t it? Leaders want to follow those who are better leaders than themselves. You're asking does a leader follow?. Yeah! Leadership is advanced followership. This means every leader is an advanced follower. Leadership is all about a life influencing another. You ought to be following a leader while others are following you too. If you're a leader and no one is following you're just taking a walk or stroll. (Coughs).
When someone respects someone as a person, they admire him. When they respect her as a friend, they love her. When they respect her as a leader, they follow her.
Three ways to measure your level of respect
#1. Take a look at who you attract.
There is a law that says you attract who you are. This means you tend to attract people that have similar values or disposition as you. “One measure of respect is the caliber of people who choose to follow you"
#2. See how people respond when you ask for commitment or loyalty.
It is so simple when people respect you they will be loyal and committed to you. Do they step up and sign up? Are they ready to take risks, put in long hours, or do whatever is necessary to get the job done? Are they ready to change when you ask for it? If they doubt, question, make excuses, or walk away, your level of respect might be very low. Do they value obedience over convenience?
#3. Know how much respect those closest to you have for you .
I observed that the more you are closer to people the less they tend to respect you. It's more easier for people who aren't close to respect you. So because of this some people are too quarantine. The truth is If your family (who knows you best) and your closest coworkers (who work with you every day) have respect for you, then you are a success and your leadership will be effective.
#4. See How people listen when you talk.
When a leader talks people will want to listen to what he has to say. A leader's word should be full of inspiration, wisdom and exhortation. Listening shows respect and value. Nobody will listen to you if they don't value or respect you.
