TITLE : The Power & Discipline Of Vision 3
Proverbs 29:18 "Where there is no vision, the people perish (show lack of discipline, throw off self discipline, run wild)." Emphasis added
According to the biblical perspective vision and discipline are inseparably linked. Yesterday we established that "where there is no vision, people throw off self discipline or restraint." In other words vision is the motivating stimulus for personal discipline and root of leadership. When a man captures vision for his life it automatically disciplines and control their lives. Vision is so powerful as it inspires passion. This passion controls and transform your life as a leader.
Vision is the direction of motion while passion is the fuel of motion. Vision is the primary motivator of a leader's actions, choices and behavior. What is it that should motivate us to discipline ourselves you ask? It's our vision.
All leaders have to have the quality of self discipline. No one can be truly referred to as an ideal leader without the quality of discipline.
In my leader acrostic which highlight six indispensable qualities of an ideal leader, the letter "d" stands for discipline.
An ideal leader is........
L - oyal
E - xamplary
A - accountable
D- isciplined*
E - excellent
R - esponsible
Discipline, although does not automatically make someone a leader, but no one can lead for long without it. More government leaders have failed from poor discipline than poor policies, more pastors have failed due to bad discipline than bad theology, more business leaders have sabotaged their careers from lack of discipline than lack of cash flow.
The general purpose of leadership is the exercise of influence. While everyone exercises influence, the size, power or strength of our individual influence depends upon our disciplined effort. No one leads well without paying the price of discipline. As we discipline to grow and to learn, we enlarge our sphere of influence. Growth or success doesn't just happen. You have to be intentional about it, and that takes discipline.
The bookends of success are starting and finishing. Vision gets us started; discipline helps us finish. Great leaders always have self-discipline -without exception. The key to achieving your vision is SELF-DISCIPLINE, more than any other personal quality I can think of, is the one major factor that separates leaders from non leaders. Think of all it encompasses: honoring commitments, promises and deadlines, keeping your life on schedule, being willing to go the extra mile... Self-discipline is essential to a leader's success. The alternative is a life ruled by emotions, feelings and what we can see and none of us can afford that if really we're going to fulfill our purpose and realize our potential.
SEED : Vision gets us started; discipline helps us finish.
