TITLE : The Power & Discipline Of Vision 4
Proverbs 29:18 "Where there is no vision, the people perish (show lack of discipline, throw off self discipline, run wild)." Emphasis added
A person without discipline is like a city with broken-down walls. Proverbs 25:28 (NLT)
There has never been and never will be a great leader without vision and discipline. Discipline like i shared is a result of capturing one's vision.
Vision inspires motivation, motivation gets you going but discipline keeps you growing. The nucleus of these teaching so far can be summarised in the statements below :
* Leadership is powerless without a clear vision because leaders exists to fulfill a vision.
* Vision is the source of discipline
* The root of leadership is discipline
THE KEY TO ACHIEVING VISION IS DISCIPLINE
Leaders have understood that their primary responsibility is cultivating their own personal discipline and personal growth. Those who cannot lead (discipline) themselves cannot lead others. Discipline (self control) is what makes you a star in your discipline (career).
Capturing a vision for life involves goal-setting, but discipline is goal-getting. My argument so far is vision and discipline can't be separated; one is worthless without the other. There are two many people with vision but lack discipline of vision.
Discipline is what the 21st century leaders need the most but want the least.
WHAT IS DISCIPLINE?
*Discipline is self imposed standards for the sake of a greater goal.
* Discipline means self control.
Paul gives us the meaning of discipline. It is to control your self, so that you make it do what it ought to do, rather than what it wants to do. So, to sum up, discipline is training yourself to do the right thing when you don’t feel like it.
The word translated “discipline” in 1 Timothy 1:7 is from the Greek word gymazo. We get our English words “gymnasium” and “gymnastics” from it. It means to exercise or put yourself through training. Note that the word discipline is a word with the smell of the gym in it. In essence discipline is training. If truly you've got a vision you'll pass through this training I termed discipline. Beloved your vision should propel you to train. Moses had a vision of delivering the Israelites but he had to enrol in the school of discipline where he was adequately trained.
For any vision to be fulfilled there is got to be a training for it. This training I termed discipline.
Discipline is no fun and that's why we don't want to hear that word. Jesus says "to take up your cross to become a disciple" it isn't an exciting statement to us huh? Discipleship means discipline. Little wonder some don't like to hear teaching on that. The words are synonymous. That the words sound alike is no coincidence because a disciple is a disciplined one, a leader. Discipline won’t be easy, fun, or convenient, but it will be profitable - to achieve your goal or vision.
Hebrews 12:11 says ;
No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, for those who have been trained by it, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace . Did you see a connection between righteousness & discipline?
TOM LANDRY ON DISCIPLINE
Tom Landry, He is ranked as one of the greatest and most innovative coaches in National Football League (NFL) history, the first football coach for the Dallas Cowboys for 29 consecutive years as the coach of one team along with his 20 consecutive winning seasons.
He said “ The job of a football coach is to make men do what they don’t want to do in order to achieve what they’ve always wanted to be."
That’s exactly what we must do as leaders. We must make ourselves do what we don’t want to do in order to become what we’ve always envisioned or hope to become. Shalom!!
