TITLE : CULTIVATE A TEACHABLE SPIRIT 3
Proverbs 26:12 :
"Do you see a man who is wise (not teachable) in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him." emphasis added mine
Teachability is usually not an ability but a quality we demonstrate. It is not a talent you're born with- those are victim of mindset. You can learn to be teachable. It is a trait or character that can be cultivated. One of the true characteristics of a disciple is that of being a “disciplined learner” who is teachable. This article is for the purpose of speaking to such an attitude and looking at the dynamics that are involved. Having a teachable spirit is something that most lack, and I will be the first to admit and put me into the list of "most people." In the last episode I shared that the the greatest enemy of learning is knowing. This means your depth of knowledge can be a huge blow to your growth and learning. Attitude is very much more important than Knowledge.
If you truly want to learn, be teachable. There are some people if they don't know you can't teach them. Teachability is a choice. We choose whether we are closed or open to new ideas, feedbacks and willingness to change.
Leadership is a commitment to continuous and lifelong learning. Leaders never graduate from learning because when you stop learning you stop growing and when you stop growing you stop leading. But if leaders remain teachable and keep learning, they will be able to keep making an impact as leaders. Many people are chasing knowledge instead of learning. Knowledge isn't the same as learning. “It’s what you learn after you know it all that really counts.”
HOW DO I MAINTAIN A TEACHABLE ATTITUDE?
Developing a teachable spirit should be at the top of your personal growth and development as a leader. If you desire to be an effective leader whose impact is boundless and lasting, then you need to cultivate the following important traits or characters of teachable people. In the next few days I'll be sharing some important traits of teachable leaders with you and as well help you to identity whether you're teachable or not, what are the unteachable(non leaders) like?.
Today, l want to briefly share with you the first trait or character of teachable leaders that you must cultivate to be an effective leader.
TRAITS OF TEACHABLE LEADERS
#1 TEACHABLE LEADERS ARE GREAT LISTENERS.
Teachable leaders are great listeners, they listen more than they talk. Unteachable people always talk more than they listen. It's impossible to learn if you're always the talking type. I believe God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason- to listen at least twice more than we talk.
Here is what I suggest as you pursue teachability: 1. Learn to listen. American writer and philosopher Henry David Thoreau wrote, “It takes two to speak the truth – one to speak and one to hear.” Being a good listener helps us to know people better, to learn what they have learned, and to show them that we value them as individuals. As you go through each day, remember that you can’t learn if you’re always talking. As the old saying goes, “There’s a reason you have one mouth and two ears.” Listen to others and remain humble, and you will learn things that can help you expand your life.
