TITLE : CULTIVATE A TEACHABLE SPIRIT 4
Proverbs 26:12 :
"Do you see a man who is wise (not teachable) in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him." emphasis added mine
#2 Teachable leaders are humble
The greatest stature anyone can ever come into in the realm of the spirit is humility. - Rick Joyner
There is another word to describe teachability- humility. I believe humility is a character trait that every leader should value and cultivate. You can't be possibly teachable if you're not first humble.
When people talk about leadership, they don’t use the word “humility” too often. More likely, they describe a leader as strong, assertive, principled or ambitious. “Humble” may not ever come up, and if it does, most times it might not be used as a compliment.
Leaders possess a pervasive spirit of humility. A lead need a mixture of vision and virtue. Our attitude or character is more important than our vision, ability or talents. Humility is an attitude that can be cultivated. Most people especially knowledgeable ones are not usually humble. In fact I observed some people are not proud but yet they are not humble. I really do not know how to explain. Some people aren't proud deep down in their heart but their attitudes does not reflect humility. Humility is an indispensable trait leaders must cultivate to continue leading.
What is Humility??
Humility shouldn't be confused to mean stupidity, Being humble, therefore, isn't devaluing, degrading your self, or lowering your self worth in the estimation of another.
I love to define humility as the accurate and correct estimation, awareness and acceptance of your true worth, value and abilities. For instance you're proud if you under estimate or over estimate yourself. The word humble is derived from the Latin root word humus, meaning earth. Humility connotes earthiness, awareness of one's true essence.
Humility also does not mean to think less of yourself but to think of yourself less.
Rick Warren put it this way: “Humility is not denying your strengths. Humility is being honest about your weaknesses.”
A humble leader is willing to do anything nobody else wants to do. If something needs to be done, someone with true humility will step in and do it.
Jesus, is the greatest example of humility.
In the Jewish customs in those days before a meal was served, a servant washed the feet of the arriving guests. Jesus and his disciples was supposed to have their last meal together. There were no servants available for the dinner, but their feet needed to be washed just the same. I can imagine the heart of Jesus' disciples who would do this dirty job. As they were contemplating who to wash, Jesus (God) took a towel and a wash basin and began to do what His disciples refused to do. I believe Jesus' disciples was flabbergasted and stunned to silence. Jesus has taught them a valuable leadership lesson. He told them,
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also do likewise. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done
- John 13:14-16
